July 4th is one of my favorite holidays! My heart and soul are made up of red, white and blue. I've loved teaching my children about the foundation of our country and the brave men and women who made it possible. As the years have gone by we've created our own traditions that we eagerly look forward to. Some are silly, some are deep and poignant, and some are delicious!
This particular holiday always seems to bring our countrymen together and I always look forward to the excitement of the season. Living in Utah there is a palpable love for country all month. A must see event is the Freedom Festival in Orem, Utah. You can experience it all from colonial artists, to colonial games and chores, to public trials and great debates. Watch a military gun display and experience what it's like to be a blacksmith or a potter.
As much as we love camping, we don't usually camp over the 4th of July. Fireworks are a MUST and Smokey the Bear says no fireworks are allowed. Utah has the best elevations for fireworks watching. From the Wasatch Mountains you can see the entire county light up and it is breathtaking!
The night wouldn't be complete without a BBQ with friends and family and our favorite snacks. Soaring to the top of the list is Strawberry Rhubarb Pie! Mmmmmm... I'm drooling just thinking about it. I hope you enjoy these fun treats as much as we do. Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans!
